Although it is often misrepresented in movies and television as a potentially violent sport used primarily to fight off bad guys, there are many benefits to using taekwondo for self-defense and many other reasons. At Karate Atlanta, we use taekwondo to teach people how to defend themselves as well as build confidence, improve self-esteem, and strengthen the mind as well as the body. Here are a few of the benefits of taekwondo you might not have known about before.

Improve Self-Esteem

Training in taekwondo will improve self-esteem and help you feel better about yourself overall. Statistically speaking, people who think well of themselves are more successful in all other areas of their lives, even if nothing physically changes about them (although taekwondo will improve physical appearance as well by helping you become stronger and fitter).

Build Confidence

Taekwondo pushes students to go beyond what they thought they could do. As you are able to push the limits of what you thought you were capable of before, you will find that you have an increased level of confidence that bleeds over into all areas of your life, not just the physical.

Develop Discipline

As faulty human beings, we all have weaknesses. For some, it is overeating and for others, certain addictions seem to control who we are and what we do. Taekwondo is as much mental exercise as it is physical exercise and you will find that you have an increased ability to exhibit self-control over those things that once brought you down.

Self Defense

Taekwondo also teaches people those skills necessary to protect themselves if they find themselves being attacked or in danger. Although the values of taekwondo do not promote violence for the sake of violence, self-defense is another matter altogether and people should know how to protect themselves.

Strengthen Mind and Body

As you train in taekwondo, you will find that your body is strengthened as well as your mind. Your ability to control your thoughts and increase your self-discipline will improve drastically as you learn to gain power over your weaknesses.
